topias = utopia + dystopia + heterotopia
TOPIAS I is the first of a series of exhibitions that examine contemporary Heterotopias.
The exhibition documents human-made spaces designed to promote privacy, sterility, surveillance and production, including a hospital, a morgue, an oil refinery, a coalmine, a power station and a prison.
By focusing on society’s most sterile spaces that harness functionality, I want to highlight the most basic requirements for human life: such as our need for food; cleanliness; the simulation of nature and above all; beauty.
TOPIAS I was proudly supported by Creative Victoria through the VCA and MCM Mentorships program, the Yarra City Council, and NAVA through an Australian Artists’ Grant
made possible through the generous sponsorship of Mrs Janet Holmes à Court and the support of the Visual Arts Board, Australia Council for the Arts.
